"Before" serves as a prequel to Cambria Hebert's debut novel, Masquerade.Heven is your normal teenage girl, her biggest worries are if her crush likes her, what to wear to school and if she will be made the head cheerleader. You know, the stuff majority of girls think about or even dream about when they are little. Heven has it all in this story, she is beautiful and popular and it seems like everything is going her way.
But the question is, how long can it last?
Cambria Hebert was able to capture the average teenage female thought process perfectly. So well, in fact, I found myself rolling my eyes at the trivial things that Heven and her friends talked and obsessed about in the story.
But, I had to remind myself that I was once a teenager too (What? I was) and admittedly acted the same way.
Don't get discouraged or turned off though, the happy happy joy joy feeling of the story doesn't last long.
Something wicked this way comes after Heven.
What is it? Why is it after her and what happens to Heven?
Hebert drops a bomb on you like nobody's business leaving you dying for more.
I believe that this is a great introduction to her next book, Masquerade, and will definitely have you running out to get it and find out exactly what happened and where this series is going to go.
If "Before" is any indication of what to look forward to, this is gonna be one heck of a ride!

Darn, I thought I really wanted to read Masquerade before, I definitely want it more now. This little novella is just a tease to make you desperate for the next installment. It lays the groundwork for Masquerade, giving you a little insight into both the main characters and definitely leaving you wanting more. You wouldn’t think 20 or so pages would have you drooling over the story already, but it does.
What is Sam’s secret? Why on Earth is such an obvious bad-boy attracted to such a goodie-two-shoes? How the heck does Cambria Hebert plan on making this series end well? And the big one, if this tiny novella manages to enrapture me entirely and then leave me with a cliffhanger, am doomed to endure the same torturous end with Masquerade? I guess I’ll have to keep reading to find out!
Yup! Totally caught in this story. Lol. It's just a taste of what is coming. It has the perfect amount of mystery and tension.
And guess what? It ends spectacularly!
I think the way Sam follows her is kinda creepy, pretty much a stalker kind of thing but that also makes it interesting!
I wanna know what he is and what happened after that last phrase!

Great! As I didn't have any interesting series to read, I'm completely drawn by this one too!
My only critic It was too short! XD , but that's the point of a prequel isn't it? Leaving you wanting MORE! Mission accomplished by Cambria Hebert!
I found Cambria through the # series and that is definitely a different ball park than these, but I love all different genre's of books and adore Cambria's writing. This was definitely a little lacking but it was only a little novella and it left me really wanting to read the rest. I was definitely pulled to Heven and Sam. I was left a bit confused and quickly jumped into the next book which is actually the first in the series, Masquerade. So from one who was a bit confused but also intrigued, give it a chance and jump right in cause it is worth it!
Started off kind of slow but didn't end that way!
It became a creeptastic intro to Sam and Heven. They're not an item, but Sam sure wishes they were. Plus there's a 'monster' that I really wantt to know more about.
Good thing I have Masquerade on my , because I'm left on the edge of my seat.

My Thoughts
I enjoyed this read I just had to scream a little at the end because well Cambria left me hanging. I need to know what happens I am so glad I already have the official book 1 in the Heven and Hell Series Masquerade. On my ready to be read.
This is a story of Light and Dark that is for sure we have Heven the light a regular teenage girl living a normal life. Heven's biggest concern is whether her crush likes her. She is oblivious that she has a secret admirer. Sam the dark he lives in the shadows and answers to the monster. Sam has promised to stay away from Heven and when he didn't there was a price to be paid. Cambria has written a beautiful short story that gives just enough information to make sure that you want to stay along for the ride. Cambria's words are written so beautifully and flow so well. And I am looking forward to reading more in this world of Heven and Hell that Cambria has written.

The description is intriguing, that this story is a prequel to what happens once Heven's (yes, that's her name) life changes in a big way.
This short story is told in alternating points of view, Heven being one, and the other is Sam, a boy who is seemingly obsessed with Heven.
Heven's a high school cheerleader, blonde and ditzy. I'm not sure what Sam sees in her because she reads like the type of girl who is a dime a dozen, but maybe she has a secret--at least I'm hoping she has one that will be revealed in the full-length novel.
Sam does dirty work for someone he describes as monster, and refers to as "it". That definitely catches my interest. Is the monster a demon? Is it a person? Again, I'm sure we'll find out in the novel.
These two characters haven't met in this story, but instead Sam spends his time stalking Heven. Following her around in the dark, waiting for her, looking for her in the usual places she likes to go...
This one fell a bit flat for me, really. I understand that this is a prequel but I think more could have been done with the story anyway.
