DAUGHTER AM I--PAT BERTRAM-KINDLE EDTION.
Mary Stuart has grandparents or had grandparents, but they were murdered and she has inherited their farm. It seems that due to family politics her dad disowned his parents' years before. Mary discovers a little black book in her grandfather's possessions and finds a ragtag bunch of former mobsters who Mary takes on and makes friends with -Sounds like a trip down the yellow brick road at first but turns into a rousing adventure to find the hidden gold from a long ago robbery. Their prime nemesis in this case is a gold obsessed murderer following them.
I found this book to have a really neat concept to it. Most people boo anything to do with mafia or anything criminal. In this case these characters are lovable octogenarians on a last adventure for buried gold and who provide our heroine with insight to what her grandfather was like. Ms. Bertram has written characters you can cheer on and hope the best for. There is a little bit of everything for everyone in DAUGHTER AM I; humor, adventure, insight and a love story when Mary meets Tim. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good road trip story. I GIVE DAUGHTER AM I FIVE GOLD BARS.

Daughter Am I edition by Pat Bertram Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Teach teaches, Crunchy crunches, or would if he weren't getting too old, and other assorted folk of increasing years join up for the ride. I love the way the author collects her characters in Daughter am I, each interacting for just long enough to establish recognizable voice before the search moves on. The stories in this novel roll with the wheels of the bus, round and round through the tortuous history of Midwestern mobs, to the mystery of Mary's grandparents' demise... and on to a sort of grown-up Secret Seven treasure hunt, with all its curious side-journeys, dangerous foes, missing gold and mixed-up relationships.

Pat Bertram is a recently published author, and this is her third novel (already!). She's published with a small publisher called Second Wind, and if you haven't heard of her, or them, you might want to jump on the bandwagon now before Pat gets famous. She has a distinctive writing style, with good old-fashioned plots that drive forwards on the innocent enthusiasm of youth, and with characters that straightforwardly narrate their tales. But the stories Pat tells are thoroughly modern too, with up-to-date scientific and historical research, complex scenarios, and hints of next year's secrets and the next decade's headlines. Her characters are wonderful and flawed, old enough to have those tales to tell, and lively enough to have tales to build as well.

In this book I learned why the Syndicate's not the Mafia, how to read a serial number that's been filed off a gun, and how many people die per second in the United States. I learned about time and politics and attitudes, and even a bit about myself. There's gold in these pages, a gold standard you can really believe in, and treasure in the "elders" who seek it. Don't miss this book; don't avoid it just because you can't guess the genre. It's whatever you're looking for, and truly, while some of the characters may have been con-artists, that's not a con.
In Daughter Am I, Pat Bertram has created an entertaining tale of friendship, discovery, and mystery filled with diverse characters who are instantly likeable. Not only does she bring to life the past world of the gangster era in the current age where it is mostly forgotten, she also reminds us through her elderly cast just how closely linked the past and present really are.

Mary Stuart received a letter from a lawyer that would change her life. She learns that not only did her parents lie to her about her grandparents having died many years before, but also that those grandparents have just passed away and left her everything.

She immediately learns that her grandparents were murdered!

Driven by curiosity and perhaps a sense of self loss and the lack of direction her life has, Mary is drawn into the intrigue of finding out who these people were who her father denied her for her whole life, and the possibility of solving the mystery of their murders.

Mary begins to follow a trail she picks up at her grandparents farm, one that leads her back through their life by finding people who had once known them and finds herself travelling with an unlikely group of relics from a past era. Each stop they make in the search for truth ads another elderly person to her crew. They seem more interested in breaking the boredom of their lives and the excitement of sneaking off on a road trip than anything and yet hold the key to the secret of her grandparent's murder.

With colourful characters, leftovers from the long gone age of the gangsters, including Lefty, Teach, Happy, Lila, and more at her side, Mary finds more than just answers. She finds more questions and love, and a direction for her life.
